I am big on homemade presents. I suck at them but I like attempting them.
I think people are more forgiving with homemade presents. Like someone can spit out the jam you made, or even end up in the hospital on life support and still say, "Aww wasn't that nice of her to try though? How was she to know you had to wash the berries first and that you shouldn't pick the ones near the Nuclear Plant?" Whereas when you buy people the special Walmart Christmas gift pack of teeny jams they give each other that knowing look, force a smile and then put the jam down on the floor amongst the wrapping paper and try to kick it under the couch.
It doesn't even seem to matter that Walmart can be more dangerous to attend than a nuclear plant. People just hear Walmart and they hear, "Oh right, I am just a Walmart, last minute, what the hell are we going to buy Aunt Rita type of present?" They hear that because that is what THEY said when they were Christmas shopping at the last minute for Aunt Rita in Walmart. (they got her the special coffee lovers mug with a candy cane)
That is one of the reasons knitting is a good thing to do at Christmas cause you can drop stitches and leave big holes and just say "That was the pattern," and no-one even knows.
That's what I love most about families at Christmas time ... families don't know anything.
