I think parents should consider the nicknames they give their kids ...

I had a friend in school who was called Birdy. I think mainly because she was tiny and had big eyes, a pointy nose and liked to eat worms.

I could be wrong.

As a baby it might sound kind of cute and you can explain the eating disorder but as a kid in school, when all the other children use the excuse "a little birdy told me" ...well ... there is a reason those birds walk like they have a sore ass ....

The Honeymoon Phase.

I asked my hubby this morning if he thought, after 11 years of marriage that the honeymoon was over.

I only asked because he did not hand me a love poem with my bed in breakfast and the cut out toast hearts looked like he had not really been paying attention and thinking of me when he did them. I mean I think romance is really important and if he felt he was slipping I was willing to enroll him in remedial romance training.

I just think he needs to try a little harder ... some of his love songs have not been as nicely phrased as they were in the beginning and I definitely think the quality of the gifts has deteriorated.

I found a woman named Bertha who takes men on for training. I just have to get him a black latex body sock and a leash and she said she can start right away. Valentines Day this year should be much better!

Trains are new to me ... in Canada we use trains mainly for cattle and grain. Here in Australia they use it for people.

So we sometimes take the train into Brisbane and we have taken it on other trips across the country. I actually don't mind travelling by train ...

It Helps To Be Resourceful.

Growing up on the farm we were not close to any 7-11's so we had to improvise. Of course, on a farm, any improvisation included livestock.

So when we wanted candy we could saddle up the horses, grab some costumes and ride around the countryside stopping at all the farm houses and knocking on the doors yelling "TRICK OR TREAT." Did you know that when people are stunned, and when you have more than one person and a couple of horses acting like asking for Halloween Treats in the middle of summer is completely normal, people tend to go along with it?? No-one likes to be outnumbered .... not even the sane, amongst the insane.

We scored more candy that way ...

Of course it does not translate as well here in Australia. Hubby keeps hiding my costumes and the neighbours all have firearms that they keep near the front door...

The Life of A Magazine Layout Woman.

I got up this morning and put on my prettiest lingerie and laid down on the settee with my box of bonbons and some champagne and some fashion magazines and my husband had the nerve to some in all sweaty from working in the yard and ask me what I thought I was doing.

I tried ignoring him but he stood there all dripping and everything so I pointed to a fashion layout in the magazine of exquisite lingerie and asked, "Isn't it obvious?? I'm working. You can't possibly think these women just showed up and laid down on these couches and snap snap they took the pictures and that was it can you? I mean there are rehearsals and fine tuning... fashion lay-out is a real art. I may have to be here all day until I get it right you know ..."

I think he finally understood ...he went away. I could tell by the way he slammed the door that he was not going to be back for awhile. He thinks I have the lines between me and my avatar blurred and he has told me he just doesn't see it. I don't know how many times I have to tell him it helps if he takes his glasses off.

Laughing ...It's A Mating Call?

According to experts only women refer to the men in glowing terms of "and he makes me laugh." Men seldom, if ever, see this an asset worth explaining to other men about their love interest.

Evidently mother nature gave men humour to impress us women and have one more tool in their arsenal to date and mate because we all know that is THE goal in life and try as men might, even in a suit instead of a saber tooth tiger draped fur, they cannot escape their basic drives. This is just a scientific way for explaining that men are always thinking about sex and not intended to be funny - science is never funny.

Men were given humour they say, because we have other things to entice the opposite sex with - like boobs. They are intimating that women are not funny. Women cannot have both humour and boobs because that would not be fair.

So I guess I have to give one of those up ... where do I put used boobs?

Feminine Wiles.

When you grow up on a farm it can be tough to figure out all the feminine stuff you have to know to compete in the big city.

Girls who wear see through clothing, or really low tops, or slits up to their thighs in their skirts ... I studied all the techniques and then had to put it into practical application. It seemed clear to me .. the object was to show as much of you unmentionables while appearing innocent and blameless.

It took me awhile to get the hang of it. Like the first time a woman came up to me when I walked out of the bathroom and told me my dress was caught up and my butt was showing ...

I had to shove her out of the way, she was stealing my light, and it took me almost 20 minutes to get that dress to hang seductively over one cheek while tucked up in my pantyhose ...

Go tuck your own dress "honey."

There is a show on television that evidently reveals that there is a dark sinister side to all those fairy tales - that they are real and we should all be very afraid ...

I tried to point that out to my nursery school teacher who was having us do "Ring Around the Rosie" when I told her it was actually about the Black Plague and the practice of sprinkling the bodies with ashes and then everyone dies in the end. I wanted to know if she thought that was a helpful image to send children through life with. Nursery School was when I began my love affair with the Naughty Chair.

And "Pop Goes the Weasel" ... has she seen how in love with Mulberries the Australians are? There is a reason there are no weasels in Australia ... or Monkeys for that matter ... they both got "popped." All hail the Mulberry!! And All Hail the Nursery School conspiracy where they go out of their way to traumatize kids ... you should see some of those kids I went to nursery school with ...

I always hate it when you go places and some woman is yacking about her prize winning roses or her steroid pumped veggies that won first place at some "fair."

Like why do they call it a "fair" anyway - it is not like everyone who enters all those dumb pie and quilting contests all get a prize - which would be fair...

Nope they always get first, second, third, honourable mention and then NADA .. even a loser ribbon would show more humanity than just leaving quilt after quilt lying there with all their cute little duckies and star patterns gathering dust.

"Oh hey - there is nana's quilt that she stitched by hand - her one hand, blind, waiting for her heart transplant ... what did she win?"

Nothing - the prize went to Mrs. Schmaltz who could afford an $18,000.00 computerized sewing machine and silk flown in from Asia made by virgins living in a hidden city who gathered it from the silk worms who were personally hand fed and massaged each day. Mrs. Schmaltz could also afford someone to feed her and massage her as she pushed the buttons on her sewing machine that one day that she had to work on her prize winning quilt.

How is that fair?

And as for the vegetables on steroids ... just wait until one of those squash kill someone with roid rage and we will see how "awesome" they are.

Hat Box Police

I like to police the lives of others ... mainly because I just like to arrive at places, put on a uniform and take charge ... AND I like strapping on a gun and having tear gas at my finger tip.

So usually when I am invited to tea and I see hat boxes, I like to insist everyone stand back, and then carefully open the hat box and dump the contents. If it is not a hat, then I confiscate the box, under section 329-C which relates to having containers that are used in a way that is misleading and disappointing. Hence, if your "HAT" box is "HATLESS" then I am mislead and disappointed.

I don't destroy the hat boxes, I just find a good home for them where they will be treated properly ... mine ... of course ...

Study's Work Well.

I found that people have aversions to "study's" and so they make terrific places to make out ...

Whenever my boyfriend would come over, forget the bedroom where the door must remain open, or the basement where my brother was always sent to "play pool" with us or even going for a walk where my brother just spied because he thought he was invisible ... I would say ... "I guess we will go talk in the study."

Who checks on anyone in a study?

My Romance with Fur.

My Romance with fur began at an early age ...

I loved the wolves that raised me ...

And then when I was rescued and given to those weirdos who called themselves my Grandparents ( and I am still waiting for someone to prove some kind of tangible proof that they actually WERE my grandparents) I became very fond of cows ...especially the fluffy ones.

Of course when a child plays dress up you have to improvise ... oh wait ... most of us grown women are still having to do that ... pretending that last years shoes are THIS years ....BUT as a child you were not generally let in to play with the fab dresses in your grandfather's closet so you REALLY had to improvise.

I just need to explain this so you understand that all those childhood pictures with the cat around my neck was NOT me liking cats ... I needed a fur wrap ... and the cows were not as bendy ...

I love it when designers get really creative and take fashion beyond thread and needles and fabric to nature and dangerous weapons ...

I think it ramps up the whole fashion thing - you know how much wine and ass can you sip and kiss (you figure it out). After awhile you want something new and exciting and frankly dead branches and antlers AND making modelling a contact sport could be highly exciting. You have to be beautiful AND tough. Imagine the Next Top Model Comps if they could actually take each other out? I mean you cannot scoff at the kind of money wrestling brings in these days.

So ya this dress is a big winner for me - that it looks so fab AND I could take someone's eye out with it .. LOVE IT!

Birds Nest Soup

There are lots of birds in Australia - pretty much it goes like this ... the more attractive the bird is ...the more annoying the sound is that they make.

I think it is a way of equalizing out being a bird - applied to humans it would be like the pretty girls would be encouraged to never talk on account of their voices sound like nails on a chalkboard while the less attractive girls would be blessed with the voices of angels.

I like that ... because if we further applied bird rules to life ... the birds with the really annoying voices - at 4 AM every morning ... they are the first ones to get shot.

I like to hand feed the ones that sing beautifully.

I am just saying ... pretty isn't everything. I guess mom was right.

I decided one day it might translate well to real life so I grabbed some lace and swathed myself in it and wandered around the farm.

My brother: "You look like a freaking mummy that threw up doilies."
The hired Man: "Are you a crocheted ghost?"
My Grandmother: "THAT's MY best Table Cloth .. you march right into the house and take THAT off young lady."

POINT: Gaussian Blur is best left to the experts. It can be a dangerous tool in the hands of an amateur and instead of looking Fabulous you look like a sideshow freak AND you end up with lots of bruising on your butt!

Photos for My Kids.

I'm a really nice person. My kids take photos of them and their kids and send them to me .. all kind of foggy and ethereal, everyone smiling - clearly drugged - and sometimes even dressed in matching clothes. They are the kind of photos you put in beautiful frames and casually place around the room where you are entertaining so that when people think ill of you they will look at your beautiful children and go "WOW, she must not be as bad as I think, look at the beautiful children she has!"

It is amazing what years of therapy can do for kids - and good drugs.

But anyway, I wanted to return the favour and do something wonderful for my kids, being as they live around the world from me in the frozen north lands of North America, never come to visit me, never call, never write ...

It is winter there now. They are pretty much housebound with all their kids ...kids on sugar from over Christmas, spoiled kids ... kids who plot together while the winds howl outside their doors and the snow piles up...

So I look outside at the warm green that is year round in Australia ... the beauty, the birds singing, our lovely pool ... and I think ... I need to send them a picture that they can put up in their living rooms of their beloved mother, being warm and happy, frolicking amongst the roses and the butterflies ... to inspire them ...to warm their frozen hearts (and feet).

SO ... I run and leap and photograph myself ... the camera on the tripod catching the right moment as I (looking so much younger than I really am) leap barefoot, dress streaming behind me .. at exactly the right moment .. click click click ...

Flowers in my hair ... I am a flower child, forever beautiful and youthful .... ahhh life .. That is just the kind of person I am, so willing to share my happiness and be inspirational ...

One of my children called me when the package arrived to tell me the kids were unwrapping it, excited to be getting a present from me. She had them all on Skype video. The little dears unwrapped it ... picked up the picture ... blinked ....

and screamed ....

One ran from the room crying.

One looked in the box, shook it, turned it upside down, and then threw themselves on the floor in a tantrum.

And the oldest looked at the picture carefully and asked their mom, "Who is the old lady running around outside in her nightgown?"

Hope Chests.

In my grandmother's day they had hope chests. The idea was that a girl, through out her life should put all kinds of things in it hoping she would one day be married and could use all the things that were in it in her own home.

It was a good way to keep a girl occupied and away from playing with the boys. "Mom can I go climb trees now with my brother?"

"No dear, you have to crochet another doily today ... one day you will want a nice bedside table and you will appreciate having a doily to put on it."

Or ... "Here, your grandma died and she left you her tea cups, a table cloth AND her false teeth .... put them in your hope chest!"

One can only imagine all the fun as a young girl took her newly engaged fiance up to her room to show him the treasures in her hope chest. "Look ... I made this apron and embroidered it with my own hair!"

Of course, time moves on and things change - old ideas are simply not practical. Sometimes we do away with them completely and sometimes they morph into something more magical ....

Today girls get training bras for their "hope chests" and then if those don't work they get implants. This new method seems to be a lot more effective in securing a husband ... and that magical reveal moment is a lot more ... ummm ... magical!

Something Wicked ...

For some reason whenever anyone said things like "Something Wicked This Way Comes," or "Have you read The Exorcist?" or "Do you believe in hell?" .... everyone looked at me.

I had butter ... in my mouth ... and it was NOT melting so I have no idea what their problem was.

I think when you live on the prairies and it has been cold and you have been snowed in for weeks and the electricity is out, that people just turn on one another like that. I think that a lot.

I would like to think it applied in this case but probably not on account of it wasn't cold, it had not snowed for weeks, the electricity was not out and it wasn't even winter ... it was usually summer and everyone was watching TV and eating watermelon.

I may have to rethink what it is that makes people turn on one another like that ...

Til The Cows Come Home ...

I would just like to say - regarding "partying until the cows come home" it really depends on the cows doesn't it?

I mean what's to say that the cows NEVER come home? Milk cows may be pretty uncomfortable and come home begging to be milked but what if on their way home they pass a milk maid station where a kind milk maid offers her services for uncomfortable unmilked cows and she tells them they don't have to go home ever again, for a small fee she will milk them every day and she has milk stations set up on ever field corner for their convenience. They might just go and wander willy nilly their whole lives.

Which cows are we talking about anyway? Your grandparents certainly cannot say for certain that the cows THEY were referring to and the cows YOU were referring to were one and the same right? Just because THEIR cows came home doesn't mean jack squat.

Christmas Heat...

I am thinking that Australia should just have a Christmas buffet of various MELTS for its Christmas fare ...

Cheese melts, tuna melts, melting moments ... even things like s'mores and fondues would do well ... just set out on table and wait ... if anyone asks ... it is supposed to look that way!. It certainly beats trying to explain melted turkey and green salad ...and my favourite ...jello ring soup!

Then it goes with the face melts and the puddles in chairs where people used to sit .... although I quite like my mother in law as a puddle ...less intimidating...add some ducks lily pads and she can be darn right cute ...

All that Glitters is ... Grandma's Teeth??

Ever noticed how your grandparents are obsessed with hoarding money/gold/treasure?

We finally got grandma out of her pirate outfit and told her there was no more treasure at the nursing home ... Johnny Depp had already been there and plundered the lot .. and then we had her over for some Christmas cheer. She is obsessed with gold and keeping every little piece she has because it is "going to be worth a fortune and just what do we think we will do if one day we can't afford toilet paper?" She wanted my husband to pull his gold tooth ... for the sake of the economy ...

I was putting out the dessert when I looked over at the tree and noticed that all the gold balls on the tree were dull and gray. I walked over and looked at them and they had all these striations on them and I looked to the floor and there were little flecks of gold leading right back to grandma's chair ...

I walked over to her and she looked up at me and smiled ... her false teeth were covered in gold flecks ...she had been gnawing the christmas balls again!! A quick check of her purse found a baggy full of gold flecks. She seemed oblivious to the improprieties and unsanitary conditions of her gnawing the Christmas balls .. and went right on slurping her mince tart....

My husband was like, "OMG! What are we going to do about this? "

I told him to relax ...

Boxing Day we should be able to score some new gold Christmas balls for a decent price ... once I hocked Grandma's teeth ...

Christmas Schedules.

I have been listening to the big run downs for everyone's Christmas schedule.

You know where you go over in the morning somewhere and then you hang out until the evening when you eat .. by then everyone is cranky and OD'd on candy canes and heard Uncle Jim's story about how he killed a bear with his bare hands last winter 18 times, and seen the slides of John and Mary's trip around the world where the Pope himself blessed them - one too many times (as in once was too many times) and the kids have broken their toys and you are no longer speaking to your husband on account of what he said to his brother about you taking a "large" now and not a "small" like last year ....

Which is probably one of the main reasons egg nog was invented, egg nog, and wine and champaigne, and specialty beer and Grandma's extra proof scotch ... and regardless of your normal stand on drinking ... during anything family .. you should drink .. lots .. that way you might actually survive another year ...

Beware the Bears ...

I was never quite sure why everyone always wanted to try and cuddle "bears" of all things ...

I mean trying to dress them in cute little clothes and make out like they were dolls ... what was up with that? I think it was probably some kind of bear conspiracy to lure ~~lunch~~ stupid people into the woods. While you are busy trying to be all cuddly, the bear is occupied dreaming of ways he is going to rip your limbs apart.

Kind of like how the farmer tries to give the chicken a cuddle, tucking the chicken under his arm, picking up the hatchet and offering a steamy bath .... only in a more realistic, not dressed in ballerina or yodeling outfits kind of way ...

In The Jungle, The Mighty Jungle.

I had a dream last night about jungles and I looked it up and it said dreaming about jungles is a prompt for what you should blog about and to make sure I apply the jungle theme to the whole day.

Just so you know, I am sitting in my loin cloth as I type this and I frequently stop and beat my chest and do my tarzan yell.

It did get me to thinking though. I thought about Darwin's Theory and how glad I am that we have evolved because Tarzan and Jane never wore boots in the jungle and clearly ... farmers are a much higher species than I ever imagined. I mean farmers wear boots. Now on the prairies where there is nothing for miles you can easily see the cow doo doo and avoid it. I would like to point out that in the jungle, elephant doo doo would be MUCH bigger but it would not be easy to see under all those trees and snakes and big bugs and other ickky things. Can you imagine stepping in that accidentally?

I therefore determined that yes Tarzan was not very bright although I give him credit for staying in the trees and doing his swinging up there and I think we now all understand why ...and that should I ever be in the jungle I would most definitely wear boots - but NOT farmer boots ....something sexier ....and less bovine-ish.

Oops Forgot My Pants!!

Ya, I did, I forgot my pants ... that happened a lot during the seventies.

We tried lots of stuff .. things like singing "Tarzan the Monkey Man lost his pants and away he ran..." as we ran out the door. But what they didn't show you in the Tarzan cartoons is that Tarzan's people hunted him down and brought him back eventually and being half naked when you were about to get the whooping of your life was not a smart thing to do. I theorize that children on the Canadian prairies survived their upbringings mainly BECAUSE it was so cold and we have 18 layers of clothing on to protect our asses.So then I just tried teenage snottiness .... when caught in town with only a top on and Grandma fanning herself to try and create some air after she sucked it all out of the atmosphere with her over exaggerated GASP.... screaming ..."YOU forgot your pants!!!"

"Ya ... and YOU forgot your false teeth but you don't see me screaming about it do you?"

It is funny how Tarzan's people look a lot like farmers on the prairies of the frozen northland ...

Not Even a Mouse ...

I am not big into mice. Sorry .. but when you grow up on a farm you sort of separate the animals into two groups - "dinner" and "not dinner."

The "NOT dinner" components are usually nuisances ....that could be wolves and bears because they keep trying to kill you, or it might be skunks because they use chemical warfare, or mice because they are everywhere they shouldn't be, including your bed sometimes at night or under the chair you are standing on screaming.

Ya ... farmers pretty much stand and cheer when they hear that line "not a creature was stirring .. not even a mouse ..." It is tradition, like Handel's Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus only with more farm animals and lots of cowboy boots.

I couldn't stand anymore .. everyone posting pics of twinkle lights and snow ...

So I spent all morning hole punching paper, making confetti "snow"and I went outside and leapt through the air and threw the "snow" up .... and danced .... except that paper snow, in this humidity, just kind of sticks to your sweaty body AND the neighbour standing there watching you and then he says things like "You'd better pick up every single shred of that paper or I am reporting you for littering, that's a $5,000.00 fine you know ..."

...which technically, is not at all Christmassy ...

...but then neither was the standing partridge out of the pear tree that I gave him ....although it IS a Christmas Bird.

I love this time of the year when the kids are out of school and the parents wander around dazed and confused not sure how they will cope until school is back in, what with Christmas and in laws and elves and reindeer all running amuck ...

I like watching children hone their bargaining skills in the store. They allow the parents to become frustrated, then they ask for something, never let the word "no" deter them, ask again, ask again, ask again, ask again, (becoming more whiney and louder each time) and then create a huge scene and throw themselves on the floor and have a tantrum .... until they get what they want ....

It can be very effective, parents usually give in ...

It also works well on husbands ... trust me ...

I had someone read my Tarot Cards the other day and they told me I need to look in unexpected places for solutions to my problems. ...that they are right in front of me if I would just open my eyes.

So I looked everywhere as I drove to do some shopping, I looked at the houses, the people, the cars, the cats and dogs, even IN other people's cars. I looked up and down the aisles in stores ....until finally, in the drug store, I saw it ... RIGHT before my eyes ... a SOLUTION!!!!!

I am just not sure how to use it or what to do with it ... so far SALINE Solution has not done a damn thing. My wallet is wet, not filled with money. The money tree I planted is now dead. My kids are no better behaved and my mother in law called the police and said I tried to drown her.

Not to worry I found another Solution at the Grocery store. Anyone know what C-L-E-A-N-I-N-G is anyway???

A nice roaring fire on a freezing day can make you incredibly happy ....especially if you have evidence to burn....

....like the receipts for a beautiful snow globe and a hot pair of shoes and a great necklace and earrings!!

I love snowglobes, I pretend my husband is in there and I shake it and shake it until there is a fierce blizzard and then I scream and scream and then when it all calms down and the snow gently falls in the globe, I get calmer. AND ... hubby is still alive ... BONUS!!!

AND I learned that my neighbours are all poopheads and would rather sleep than listen to me screaming "I AM COOL!!" at 4 AM as I dance naked in the yard. That is what happens when you get old ... you stop caring about being cool, you don't dance, and you never get naked.

Life does not always translate easily into a musical.

Like when your grandmother tells you your room is a mess and you should clean it up at least 18 times and you don't and then she appears in your room and sees all the mess everywhere it is not a good time to tell her that "these are a few of my favourite things" and grab her hands and twirl and dance like it was all planned ....

I think it is because nowhere in the song does Julie Andrews mention "half eaten cheese sandwich and empty cans of pop," even though those are right up there with "whiskers on kittens" and "silver white winters that melt into spring ..."

Christmas Cost Saving Tip.

I love all the tips at this time of the year ... everyone has them ...

And their relevance is sort of on a scale ... you have the millionaires who recommend, buying the family and friends tickets to an exotic destination in bulk so that you get a bigger discount to someone suggesting that you use margarine instead of butter in the 800 cookie recipes you will bake to someone suggesting that wrapping prezzies in newpaper can be just as delightful.

Then you have people who set limits ... $20 on gifts, only 1 gift each, let's draw names ... that kind of thing ...

It got me thinking that yes, I definitely need to apply some cost cutting measures as well.

I decided on ONE.

I a going to save money on Christmas this year by not buying any Christmas gifts ... for anyone ...

(no-one else can use this though .. it is MY method and all of you should continue shopping for me ....)

We Pulled Together As A Neighbourhood.

You remember the neighbour that annoys everyone else in the neighbourhood except for the inlaws that live across the street and they all live together like some kind of commune and hide if they see other people because we might .. you know try to talk to them or something??? Well ....

The other night they were outside talking really loud about how THEY didn't have any cane toads in THEIR yard. Of course this would be because THEY are such superior gardeners and human being or "gardman beings."

We wept for them.

We realized that not even the cane toads like them and we thought, this is Christmas, we have to do something ....

So all the neighbours got together ....

... and we gave until it hurt...

We gathered up all our own cane toads, tied festive red bows around their necks, licked them a couple of times (and then were really having fun) ....and then released them all in the neighbours yard ...

All 5,372 of them.

Because we are a neighbourhood that cares. Alot! And that was even before we licked those toads ...

The Chickens are Loose!!

I looked out my window this morning and along with the usual suspects, the strolling magpie, a mudhen, the butcher birds carolling away ... a chicken walked by ....

I have no idea where it came from or how it got here. It headed over amongst the wallabies and checked out the water dragon .... and then it went down by the creek where the snakes are and we never saw it again.

I think it is pretty safe to say that not only did curiosity kill the cat ... it seems to have taken the chicken as well.

Running barefoot is one pleasure in life that makes everyone happy ... but I don't think they meant for you to do it through the snow .... which may account for the colour of this skin but evidently it is cool for role play and the magical realm of second life which I am not allowed to play on account of giants can't sit on toadstools or drink from buttercups. That is why I have short friends. I live vicariously through them. AND they all look up to me which makes me very happy. I may suck at being a fashion model but I can be a great role model.

White floaty dresses make me feel like an angel or a swan - either way I think it is a wing thing and flapping them makes me very happy. Not to mention that swans and angels are very closely related to world peace.

Purple anything is always great, you can flash a purple something at a senior citizen and exercise mind control over them ... they can't help themselves .. they just love purple everything. Older people are very close to peace ... on account of when you stop running around in life like a chicken with your head cut off, chasing money, power, prestige and men ... peace has a way of finding you right where you are ....

Politics Inspire Me.

The other day on television in Queensland, the Government evidently all showed up for parliament and not a single opposition was there. Wow did they get some work done that day ... bills flying past .... no arguing .... AND they got to make a bunch of nifty speeches ... on record ... about what putzes the opposition were and how they were not representing the people who elected them blah blah blah...

So the next morning I got up early and had breakfast set out, I discussed finances, mother in laws, Christmas prezzies and cutting back drastically, more money for me to shop with, less work to do .... I even laughed at them all, called them names and got a few other things off my chest. It was brilliant. I felt amazing ....I had accomplished everything I wanted and not one of them even bothered showing up. Being as I had all the documents stamped and signed by those parties interested in showing up and weighing in .. mainly me ... everything was approved and passed.

It was not quite as much fun cleaning up and doing all the dishes though ... next meeting I will have to remember there is a reason I don't cook big sit down breakfasts every morning .....

More white!! I have one clear rule of thumb - you can never have too much lace and tulle. Everything looks better and all angelic like in lace and tulle ... except your brother ... there isn't enough tulle and lace in the world to make him look angelic. Oh and cows aren't always successful either but you should try, maybe I just wasn't feeling it that day.

Poinsettias are brilliant. Not only are they incredibly pretty - they can be very poisonous so like you can threaten unruly relatives with them.

I love candles, candles always make me happy. I love having a bath with candles all over the place, it always makes me incredibly relaxed and we all deserve to be relaxed and peaceful. Just be careful not to spill any hot wax on yourself getting in and out of tub ... it can really hurt.

The world at your finger tips. It may seem like something that would bring you lots of happiness to be in charge of everything but that thing is really heavy. SNOW WHITE for Christmas and happiness and peace!! I LOVE Snow White. She is very tied into the Christmas story for our neighbour down the street who decks out his house every year with Santa, the wise men, the Dwarfs, ostriches and Snow White in a glass coffin!! He is sooooo happy!!!

I also want to give a big shout out for the cape. When you cannot sew - a cape is the way to go - no arm holes to worry about and you can also use them on kids - if you tie up the bottom too .. you can contain them for hours!! AND what is happier than some peace and quiet??

Being out in nature, in any way, always puts you in a better mood with the exception of shoveling snow, weeding the garden, mucking out the barns, building a fence, being lost in the mountains, or sinking in quicksand. When you are in a better mood, you are happy and happiness leads to blue birds.

When out in nature and it is very hot, it is lovely to have a nice little outfit that makes you feel all pretty and feminine which is what I tried to explain to my grandmother. Wearing my brother's and me down jeans, -cut off, with a tshirt sans the arms out of was not the same look as the one I was trying to show her in the fashion mag. Big comfy Chairs and a Candy Cane Ribbon Outfit!! I like to take my own comfy chair with me everywhere I go because I hate sitting on those metal jobs at all the Christmas concerts you go to at this time of the year. I know, I know ... people always ask the same question ... "how on earth do you carry THAT around with you everywhere?" Answer ... "I don't" ... THAT is what teenage boys on sugar are for. Just tell them it builds great muscles!

And how many times do you have that one extra gift to wrap and you can't find the ribbon anywhere?? Voila - now you have an outfit that can supply you with ribbon anytime .. AND if you put bits of tape all over yourself - where people can't see it of course - like in your arm pits ....you are a walking wrapping machine. It makes me happy to see other people happy and handing someone a beautifully wrapped pair of socks - again - is much more meaningful than just handing them socks. It lets them hope for just a little bit.

Everyone needs some red and green and that they are all in one outfit is a blessing that brings me a great deal of joy. WHY? Because everyone hates having to wear holly in their hair or pinned to their coat to get the red and green thing done. Now I don't know for sure that proper colour co-ordination is actually on the list of criteria for "goodness sake" according to Santa but it certainly tips the elf hat in your direction. Santa will be flattered and feel like he is one with you ... there is a whole science behind this you know. Just don't get carried away and try to go down the chimney like he does because then that is called "stalking" or "breaking and entering" ... depending on where and how ...

Log Cabins and Ponchos ... does anything say personal happiness like this combination?

Nothing is more peaceful than an escape to the log cabin, nestled in the mountains, soft snow falling, a roaring fire in the fireplace and someone else to go out and freeze the snot in their nose to collect the firewood and keep it going.

And ponchos are so perfect ... they allow you to hug yourself and shiver underneath while still looking stylish. You can also use them for another excuse of why you cannot go out and help gather wood or start the vehicles, or find out what made howling sound sort of like a wolf sound only bigger and hungrier ... outside ... you have no arms ....

I know once we get away to our mountain cabin at Christmas time the whole world settles down and when I finally get my poncho on ... I am the happiest little vegemite ever. OH and some people like to wear their ponchos with clothes underneath ... it think they take away from the poncho.

Alright now that we have the other dead bird out of the way for another year, we can once again focus on my nifty tips, inspired by the gifts of the wonderful designers participating in the POE Hunt 4, on how you can have a happy life and therefore contribute to World Peace.

This is clearly about gloves, opals and doves. Gloves can make you so happy - especially if you have to touch someone icky. Years ago, women always wore gloves, they wore them as sort of an invisible barrier between the icky guy that Aunt Martha had arranged for them to marry ... and themselves. You see back then the dude would like get overwhelmed with passion and kiss her hand ... and the Chaperone would faint and then the woman would be grounded for 8 years. Then when all "properness" went to hell (see the 70's) and guys went straight for tongue action on the mouth and wearing gloves on your tongue was just not practical. But STILL - gloves when changing a baby - FANTASTIC!!!! (especially if it is not your baby)

As for the opals ....well the story is they can make the wearer invisible if your intention is so directed and you only have to read the story above to understand the practical application. If some icky dude is trying to tongue you ... wish on your opal and think invisible and there you go!! Happiness!!

Doves are perfect for when Aunt Martha sticks her nose into your affairs and then I recommend releasing them at the wedding, right next to Aunt Martha whom you have had the hairdresser liberally "sprinkle" with sparkles and birdseed when she does her hair. One dove could be carrying a little note on its leg saying "mind your own beeswax Aunt Know-it-all."

Oh wait those are carrier pigeons that do that ... they are great too... ok this post is about gloves, opals, doves AND pigeons ... all must haves in your basket of personal happiness.

Prairie Fairy Years.

I think it is important for children to be allowed their whimsy and beliefs in fairies and such. You may not know it but fairies are a big stable of childhood on the Canadian Prairies. We love us our fairies.

Now it is true there are no lush gardens of flowers and rolling green hills with forest glens but we manage to make due and let me tell you I look back at my prairie fairy years as some of the best of my life.

It was a sad sad day when I had to take the tutu's off the cows and stop urging them to fly and to try to twinkle .. just a little .... but everyone has to grow up sometime....

Snow is a no brainer - love it falling gently on us, especially on Christmas Eve - looks fantastic with twinkle lights but add wind, cold temperatures and day after day after day after day after day after day after day ... and you have cabin fever, snow blindness and you have to spend all your fashion dollars on digging you and your kids out. This proves that moderation is required in personal happiness. It also proves that all weathermen are evil.

A good pair of runners is a huge must, and a nice scarf hopefully knit by monks in the Himalayas only using the most virgin of wool from yaks hand fed magic berries and bran. Green always makes you feel alive. Be a bit careful on the leg warmers though - they can be a glorious gift to make life worth living but don't make the same mistake and compliment your grandmother on her great leg warmers only to have her tell you she is not wearing any. Ooopsies!!

First for personal happiness in pursuit of world peace at this time of the year, you need anything Tulle - lots and lots of it. You should wear it throughout the whole holidays because it makes you feel like a princess or a bride or even a princess bride. You can tuck it in your underpants when you need to - like driving the shopping cart up and down the grocery aisle on account of it might get caught in the wheels of someone else's buggy and rip right off you. How sweet are these two gifts? Love the colours from Prism. For a long time people said there are rules! You cannot wear white after Labour Day and you can't wear certain colours together - and then they let the Australians out and one man's "Labour Day no white" is another man's "nothing day white is right!!" I always wore purple and orange together when I was in Kindergarten and I got marked down because of it. I cried a lot. They said I did not understand my colours properly. Well LOOK AT US NOW!!

So go ahead and make your space any freaking colour you want, some day a fashion designer will use those colours and everyone will go wow and you can thumb your nose at your kindergarten teacher - if you can find the nursing home where they are keeping her!!!

So here is my official kick off to the POE Hunt with a little peek at what is to come!!

You have to know I would have to do my own twist on this so I will use the items to give you tips on how to achieve happiness in your own personal space. Think about it, if we all make our personal space happy we would almost achieve peace on earth - except maybe for like the middle of Australia, Siberia, the north eastern part of Montana and most of Saskatchewan.

So tip number one, which Angel Dessous has clearly demonstrated here with this fab dress - when in doubt - put a bow on it ... a big bow .... it can hide a big ass which will make you happy right? And maybe even your significant other!

Then no matter what happens YOU are a gift. And polite people will say thank-you - even if they have no idea what to do with you. The point is they have to stop throwing things at you.

This is a personal favourite of mine ... I always carry extra bows.

The Modern Walkabout.

Aussies have this thing called a Walkabout. Wikipedia states: Walkabout refers to a rite of passage during which male Australian Aborigines would undergo a journey during adolescence and live in the wilderness for a period as long as six months.

The thing is it has been adapted by men all over the world wayy beyond the age of 16. You see them doing a walkabout for years .... only they don't know they are in the wilderness, they think they are in a hot sports car, with a young babe on their arm, living it up, while they leave the wife and kids with all the mundane stuff.

The problem is, by the time these men come to their spiritual awakening (usually when they get back from divorce court and checking the balance left in their bank accounts,) the woman, being wiser, has packed everything up in a moving van and done a "driveaway."

Good luck finding her on foot.

The Great Jump that Wasn't that Great and Wasn't Really A Jump Either.

We were invited to a parachute jump. Not to do it but to watch it/witness it/be available to help in the clean up.

When one of your kids announce they are going to jump it is a mixture of feelings. Part of me wants to be there to help push them out of the plane and part of me wants to cover my eyes.

Thank heavens the weather did not permit and there was no jump so I did not have to make a decision on that one.

I don't think you are supposed to clap though when they announce they are cancelling. In the effort to appear supportive AND cool - a parent should cluck a bit and put on the "oh how disappointing" face for their child.

Got to practice that more.

Service with a Toaster?

The world can change in one day ... in a mere snap of a mind.... Now that someone has attacked a sales person with a toaster it ruins it for all the rest of us.

I never thought of small appliances as weapons but evidently they are, and should you not be happy with the service rendered in a department store - or anywhere else for that matter - you should immediately pull the toaster or iron from your purse and threaten to use it. It may not get you what you wanted from the store BUT it certainly makes a difference in how people look at you and treat you.

Plus toasters and irons are a lot easier to smuggle into countries.

But I can't wait to see what kind of scans and security measures they come up with at the airports to make sure we don't have any illegal appliances on us.

I long for the old times when you could get away with so much more.

Like telling my grandparents I liked this guy because he was teaching me about the stars, so therefore, it was a big sacrifice considering how much I needed my sleep, but I would be needing to stay out with him most of the nights so we could observe the changing positions of the stars - for a school project of course.

They bought it.

See say what you want about the joys of all this new technology but back then when you were out in the field - you were out - no-one could locate you or the car. No-one could reach you. You had a reason for not phoning ... the best one ever ... there were no cell phones.

And the cows ... well they knew when to keep their mouths shut.

She's Gonna Blow!!!

My hubby and I had just gathered our chairs on the lawn, with the fresh popcorn, for our daily entertainment of "neighbours gone wild" when SHE appeared.

I am pretty sure she thinks she is a super hero or something with special powers that render her invisible ... otherwise I just cannot figure out why anyone would come outside looking like that. I tried to get a petition going round for everyone to sign saying that all neighbourhood superheroes should be required to follow superhero rules and wear AT least their leotards and capes ... ANYTHING would be better than seeing her unmentionable under a housecoat that probably IS meant to be worn as a cape.

Anyway she is fighting ... with just about anyone who looks at evidently. She was even swearing at the grass when she was cutting it the other day. I knew it had to be her, even though she has a husky voice, on account of men only swear at their lawn mowers, never grass!

Usually when her husband comes home we put a call into the paramedics so they can be on stand by because NOTHING pisses her off more than getting up each day and it is downhill from there. By the time he shows up, she is ropeable.

Some of the neighbours gather cause they like the drama ... I like the paramedics. Some of them are really hot. I will lay still on the street hoping they will see me. Once they tried to revive me .... can I just say that mouth-to-mouth, done in the right way, is awesome???? Since then, the night usually ends with my husband nudging me with his foot and telling me they are leaving, and me lifting my head to see the ambulance drive out of sight.

You just can't beat country life.

This is totally random, I know, BUT if you read my blog regularly you would be disappointed if I actually did a non-random post. BUT then I think, what if I did a non-random post and people actually took my picture off the dart board and pulled some of their darts out of my thigh (yes my thigh ... I am deceptively fast for an insane person.) Then I think "Nah" I wouldn't know what to do with all those sane, calm people AND I would be bored out of my mind. I would probably think that I was in church or something. My teacher always said I was like a bad accident about to happen, people don't wanna look but they can't help themselves. I have always tried to live up to that.

I just wanna say that I am still really bitter about the fact that Susan Brightman never picked me to be her double dutch skipping partner. I know you are trying to be all like, "Hey, I finally found me, wanna be my friend?" on Facebook but you know what? NO. I still cannot watch children skipping, or the Olympic Skipping competition without feeling a great big HOLE in my heart where my skipping passion used to be. I HATE YOU SUSAN and I AM NEVER GOING TO BE YOUR FACEBOOK FRIEND so PISS OFF!!

I feel much better now. I just wish that Facebook would add a button that gives you the choice to reply "ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?" and then allows you to provide a reason.

My mother-in-law still wants to know why I won't add her.

Lately I have really been worried about those Gorean girls. I mean it keeps me awake at night.

They seem so sad and really run down and tired. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

I mean they can't even seem to stand up, they just keep falling to their knees like they are exhausted and it hurts to stand up....

... and there have been a few that have just fallen face down on the floor ... now THAT is tired. Can't we have some sort of rally for them .... free iron pills and strong coffee clinics?

Spilled Milk and Crying - Don't Be Fooled by Old Wives.

I am telling you that sooner or later those Old Wives have to be leaving this mortal coil ... don't they? I mean they must be nearly petrified by now unless they are like part time super hero's or tooth fairies or something and they get to live forever. I don't remember reading anything in the fairy tale books or the Bible about Old Wives and them being around forever. I don't like it when life doesn't have rules and people don't explain things properly. It screws up my best weekends.

"There is no sense crying over spilled milk." Ya ok ... that may work in a vacuumed kitchen where it is just you and the milk. You crying over it would be pretty silly and good evidence that you need to poor another glass quickly and get those pills into yourself.

BUT when you are a kid and your grandmother just had the maid do the floors and you have company over and the best china out on the antique lace table cloth, and you are wearing your best dress .... if you spill the milk crying is completely warranted. Especially if you broke one of the best glasses too. Because the thing is ...you KNOW when everyone leaves ... you and Mr. Belt are going to be having a little visit. Now THAT is a reason to cry over spilled milk .....

Age Appropriate Balloons.

This is me doing my Mary Tyler Moore run through the streets - although I am channeling a tad of Sarah Jessica Parker and a smidgen of a clown I once saw at a curb side circus when I was a kid. (trauma always has a way of sneaking out into your adult life at the most unexpected moments)

I had three other models swearing at the traffic off camera and pepper spraying the pedestrians that kept trying to cross the street when I was doing the shoot.

You can get models for anything these days ... " I need 3 of your best that can swear like truckers!" I am telling you these modelling schools are professional set-ups - they take this shit realllly seriously. Those models knew words I have never heard of before and one of them was a Miss Universe Pageant addict and she knew 83 languages and could swear in all of them.

Next week I am hiring some models to help me recreate 1000 years BC. We are going to capture the dinosaurs in their natural setting ... that is IF we are allowed in to Buckingham Palace.

Drawing a Line.

I am not sure why some women insist on wearing leggings. I am even less sure why some of those women insist on wearing leggings with designs on them.

The lines are supposed to be straight ... see the pic in the package? Also even cute little bunnies can become downright scary morphed killer vampire bunnies if they are contorted enough. It reminds me of silly putty ... you know before we had morph buttons and computer programs to do the contortions on a picture, we would put the silly putty on top of a pic and then pull and twist and manipulate it to make the picture look funny. That way if no-one laughed you could stuff the putty up their nose.

There were a lot of mysterious deaths on the prairies during those years which can be explained by the "nose putty phenomenon" of frustrated artists who were never properly appreciated and went on to live quiet lives of desperation in a non-prairie area with their 327 cats, with dead bodies beneath their floor boards. (note to self - stop watching "Criminal Minds" I think it may be part of the problem)

Oh yah ... the leggings ... someone has to tell those women ... if the lines on the leggings become an optical illusion where your leggings appear to be moving even when you are standing still on account of all the wavy lines .... Mu-mu's may be for you!! Go Mu-Mu's!

(please give generously to the seizure association of sufferers impacted by random unintended episodes of out of control leggings)

My hubby cares a great deal about which lights I turn on in the kitchen …. Even when he is not in the kitchen and I am. He is a closet light supervisor and frequently stands around, clipboard in hand and directs and critiques my lighting technique.

I got him a flouro vest, a hard hat and flags the other day so that he can just stand in the middle of the house, direct us all and remain safe at all times. I do that because I care that he is safe and ….

…because sometimes I just cannot control myself and I cannot vouch for his safety ....

I Believe In Fairies.

I believe in fairies.

I think most little girls do ... some out of fantasies fueled by sparkle barbies, cheap video rentals and too many Disney movies (not to mention ponytails pulled wayyy too tight and tied with those ribbons with enough beads on the end of them to knock you senseless if you move vigorously ... you know like trying to breathe) ... and some out of necessity.

My belief is mainly necessity. You know when something bad has happened and the main suspect is you - even in your own mind .... and your brother is nowhere to be found? Fairies are the next best thing to blame ... as in "the fairies painted the dog orange."

During the winter months you can pretty much rely on goblins (Halloween) and Elves (Christmas) but Fairies take the rest of the year - especially summer where they can get in through the holes in the fly screens.

Lesson Learned: Beliefs kinda suck if you can't convert others. In this case, in order for my belief to provide the crutching action we have come to expect from our beliefs, it required the participation of my grandparents. We had the discussions, they just never consented to baptism.

Life Around The Porch Light.

Yes I was caught.

These are the surveillance photos a neighbour took .... I figured if the bugs are that big around here, I could just get dressed and blend in amongst them ... having an excuse to hover around the patio or porch light and throw myself at the windows and see what the neighbours are doing. I consider it my civic duty ....I mean they call it Neighbourhood "Watch" right???

They said they would have never caught me, my disguise was THAT good ...but my high heels gave me away. They led police right back to my window where I crawled back in, proving those fly screens just aren't worth the money ....

What can I say ... I am a slave to fashion ....

It is Summer!!!

Yup ... spending more and more time in the pool and after electrocuting the neighbour last year on account of I would not let go of the keyboard from the computer ... I agreed ... electronics and water ... just say no.

I am not sure what anyone is upset about ... it is not like we really liked THAT neighbour. It wasn't the neighbour who invites us over for dinner all the time and cooks like Martha Stewart ...

Really there are so many rules about pools it takes an hour just to read them all out loud to the pool monitor and to make it through the security screen and then figure out how to open the gate.

No running.
No Diving.
Bathing Suits Must Be worn at all times unless the pool monitor is "in the mood."
No Splashing.
No Peeing.
No glass containers allowed ... although they didn't let me take the big glass angel giraffe I was sent from Africa even though technically it was not a container. I was just concerned some people may feel the need to pray.

Then there are all the instructions about giving CPR and the thing is, my glasses get taken at the security gate so how the heck am I supposed to read that? "Hang on - don't go anywhwere...will be right back ....oh ya 3 breaths ...."

I am not going into the pool today - it is my own little mini protest .. I have my bathing suit, my floating duck ... and I am staking out the bathtub. It may be smaller but the security is wayyy more lax.

Shoplifting - Family Time!

According to the recent reports I have been reading, the thing to do as a family now is to take the whole family shoplifting.

You get the kids or grandma to distract everyone and then you just go crazy, helping yourself ...stuffing your bra, the baby carriage, filling your bags. Make sure you have a list, you would not want to have to go back twice!

Or spread out and all shop for a couple of items, meet up and you can all dash for the car together - exercise!!! Kids learn how to be fast, how to dodge and weave and leap into a moving car .... These are life skills that will take them places in the world.

What's more - you can actually teach your kids how to never ever waste time working for their money. It helps them to become more body conscious as they consider where to hide things AND it helps with decision making on account of you have to really consider whether you can get the bike out of the store under your t-shirt OR the iPod.

I understand Wii is coming out with an at home version you can play in the comfort of your living room so that you can bring everyone up to speed and develop your skills before trying the big heist.

AND .... should you ever get caught and all go to jail ....

There is a good chance you just launched your television career on account of you may make it on one of the those reality jail shows ... win win win ... we've come a long way Beaver Cleaver.
